Kohl King is an exhibiting artist, independent curator, and professor. She was born in Bangalore, India, and immigrated to the United States at an early age. She earned academic accolades from various institutions including Brevard College for Art and Music in North Carolina, the University of Georgia in Athens (Bachelor of Fine Arts), The Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Arts & Sciences in New York, the University of Arizona in Tucson (Master of Fine Arts), and Art Center College of Design in California.

She supplemented her academic experiences with real-life learnings that came from living in over 3 different countries, 20+ cities, and traveling extensively to many more…so many that her family kept a separate address book just for her.

Before returning to her first love of teaching, she spent many years managing large teams of diverse people working on creative projects and global initiatives for companies such as Disney and Dreamworks in Los Angeles as well as assisting artists such as internationally renowned sculptor Ursula von Rydingsvard in New York. Her experiences in traveling, living and working with people from all demographics, professions, and perspectives directly affects and influence her endeavors as an advocate, educator, and artist.

Being an immigrant to Western culture and living in numerous places throughout my life, it is of no surprise that my work primarily draws from attempts to psychologically resolve often opposing natures and their relativity to larger life situations or environments. While I work in many mediums and use materials or subjects symbolically, I am solely interested in exploring intangible concepts which deal with vulnerable emotions or experiences that seem so vast, uncontrollable, unreal, or surreal, yet are just part of being alive and living. It is very important to me to stay receptive to whatever unearths in the process of making my work, as that not only grounds me but also seems to be where my personal truths can be found.
